
PROBLEM
Choose a fictional creature—a non-existent being that interests you. Maybe it’s something you feared as a child, or a gure that simply inspires a sense of awe in you. Look for it in cinema, literature, mythology, cultural lore, religion, family tales— wherever it may live. Then, create a series of visual explorations around the creature, exploring key traits such as temperament, physical characteristics, national significance, reputation, feeling, etc.
SOLUTION
I chose the mythical Yeti, of the Himalayas. A creature with such widely known characteristics allowed me the room to explore wildly in my visual interpretations, while keeping the yeti somewhat recognizable. The idea was to illustrate the creature freely, and with range. From so many that didn't make the cut, included are some of the final images doing just that; everything from watercolor and charcoal to junk metal, live plants and a lot of photoshop. ;) The final result was the family of "portraits," below.
